The Monterrei Castle is one of Galicia’s most impressive fortresses, perched atop a hill overlooking the Támega Valley.
Its origins date back to the 10th century, though the current structure is the result of multiple renovations between the 12th and 17th centuries. It played a crucial role in defending the Portuguese border and served as a refuge for nobles and kings on various occasions. Beyond its military importance, the castle was a cultural and religious center, housing one of Galicia’s first printing presses in the 16th century. Today, it is a major tourist attraction and hosts a national parador hotel.
