Salvaterra Castle

The Salvaterra Castle, also known as Dona Urraca Castle, rises majestically at the confluence of the Minho and Tea rivers, marking the natural border between Galicia and Portugal.

Built in the 11th century, it was the scene of numerous battles during the Portuguese Restoration War in the 17th century. Its strategic location made it a key point for controlling trade and river routes between the two countries. Throughout its history, it changed hands several times, being conquered by Portuguese troops and later reclaimed by Galician forces. Today, its well-preserved walls and keep offer a journey through Galicia’s border history, while its gardens and cultural spaces make it a tourist attraction.
