Arousa Sea and Ulla River Route

Ways to Santiago

The Arousa Sea and Ulla River Route is a unique waterway on the Camino de Santiago, inspired by the route followed by the Apostle’s disciples to transport his body from Palestine to Galicia. This route combines sailing along the Arousa estuary with a land journey to the Cathedral of Santiago.

The itinerary departs from the ports of Vilanova de Arousa or Ribeira and sails between mussel rafts, crossing a privileged natural setting until reaching the mouth of the Ulla River. From there, pilgrims can continue on foot or by boat to Padrón, where the final stretch to Santiago de Compostela begins.

👉 Unique experience: Sail between mussel rafts and follow the trail of the Traslatio Jacobea.

STAGES:

1️⃣ Departure from Vilanova de Arousa or Ribeira → Sailing along the Arousa Estuary

Board a tourist boat to explore the estuary, passing by the shellfish rafts and islands of the Atlantic Islands National Maritime-Terrestrial Park. During the voyage, you’ll see the “Cruceiros do Mar,” monuments that mark the passage of the Jacobean Traslatio.

2️⃣ Mouth of the Ulla River → Padrón

From the mouth of the Ulla River, the route follows the course of the river to Padrón, a key town in the Jacobean tradition. Here you’ll find the Church of Santiago, where the boat carrying the Apostle’s remains is said to have arrived.

3️⃣ Padrón → Santiago de Compostela (25 km)

The last stage of the route, shared with the Portuguese Way. It passes through towns such as Iria Flavia, Teo, and Milladoiro before reaching the coveted Praza do Obradoiro and the Cathedral of Santiago.

This route offers a different and evocative alternative, combining the sea, history, and spirituality of the Camino de Santiago in an unforgettable journey.
