The Castle of Maceda rises atop a hill overlooking the surrounding valley, offering a strategic view of the region. Built likely between the 11th and 12th centuries, its main purpose was to protect trade routes and the territory from invasions and local conflicts. The fortress suffered damage during the 15th-century Irmandinhos Revolts, yet its granite walls still carry the memory of the feudal authority that once ruled the area. Today, following several restorations, the castle stands as a historical monument open to the public, where visitors can immerse themselves in Galicia’s medieval history.
