In the heart of the Verdugo River valley, Castle of Soutomaior is one of Galicia’s most emblematic fortresses. Its origins date back to the 12th century, although most of the current structure was built in the 15th century when it was expanded by the powerful Soutomaior family. The castle is closely linked to Pedro Madruga, a fierce Galician nobleman and protagonist of the Irmandinhas Wars. After centuries of disputes, sieges, and changes of ownership, the castle fell into disuse until it was restored in the 20th century. Today, surrounded by historic gardens and an ancient forest, it serves as a cultural space where history and nature coexist in harmony.
